FAQ

Is there anything added to any of your products?
Absolutely not. We don’t fool with Mother Nature — our products are exactly what they say they are — absolutely nothing is added. We do not add fat, sweeteners, sulfur, sulfites, preservatives, colorings — we do not add anything. All we do is take out the water — leaving intense flavor, good color and great nutrients.

What is the shelf life of products from Just Tomatoes?
We prefer that you order our products on a monthly basis to assure optimum quality.

However, our products are actually good indefinitely. They do not ‘go bad’. What happens, and why we like folks to order on a monthly basis, is that the freeze-dried products can lose their crispness and the color can fade. In excessively humid areas, there can be some ‘clumping’ of product.

Of particular note: Just Peas can lose their green color fairly quickly (especially under fluorescent lights). They will come back to green if cooked or reconstituted. In spite of this, it is one of our most popular products.

Absolutely nothing is added to any of our products so you know you are getting — real food! The intense flavor holds true.

We encourage you to assure premium quality. We recommend storing you product in the freezer to preserve the maximum quality for the maximum period of time. In the freezer, they will stay at maximum quality indefinitely.

Are there any nutrients left after drying?
Yes. Eating dried foods is the next best thing to eating fresh out of your garden. Check out the nutritionals on each product by clicking on the nutritional information link on each product page.

Why should we eat dried foods?
It’s an easy way to get your ‘5 to 9 servings of fruits and vegetables during a busy 9 to 5’ day. Great snacks — crunch and great taste. Convenience — easily carried to work, on hikes, in the car. Great to have in the pantry.

Just how many vegetables or fruits am I actually getting when I eat a serving of your products?
The drying ratio varies, depending on the product. This will be reflected in the calorie counts. For example: Tomatoes are 16:1 — Apples 8:1 Dried products are concentrated — we recommend eating a moderate amount, then more later, if you are still hungry or wanting a snack.

What Is the best way to store your products?
Keep the products in the dark (so colors won’t change), in a dry place at room temperature. Cupboards or pantries are perfect. Just not by a heat source — like over a stove or oven. Keep away from flourescent lights — it will fade the colors. For long term storage, the freezer is best — keeping optimum quality indefinitely.

Are your products organic?
Some are certified organic and others are raised conventionally. Organic products clearly state ‘organic’ in the name. All our products meet all FDA standards of food safety, and we are termed ‘clean’ in the industry, meaning that we do not add anything in the processing of our products.

Are your products kosher?
Yes, but we are not certified Kosher. Our products are produce — all we do is take the water out. Nothing except fruits and vegetables are dried on our equipment — absolutely no meats of any kind are dried at our facility. No oils of any kind are used on our equipment where it might come into contact with our products. We have a letter explaining our process in detail that we would be happy to send you. Many folks who adhere to a Kosher diet find our products acceptable.

Are your containers recyclable?
Yes, they are ‘1’ recyclable. They are also made with 20% post consumer recycled material which diverts waste from landfills. Also the company that makes them has increased the sleeve count from 25 to 50 which reduces the amount of packaging material used.

In addition, we suggest re-using them — the fact that you can see what is in them is a big bonus...

  • use them for leftovers in the refrigerator or to pack a lunch or to send leftovers home with someone
  • great in a garage or crafts area to organize supplies — and little bits and pieces of things
  • poke holes in the bottom, plant herbs — using the lids as ‘saucers ’ — collage the outside for added fun
  • put a slot in the lid and use for loose coins — what will be the dollar amount when it is full? Again, collage the outside — a great rainy day project for kids.
  • great in the laundryroom for organizing threads, safety pins, odds and ends.
  • great to stack up in a kids room — to organize small toys, craft supplies, etc.

These see-through containers really lend themselves to organizing. Let us hear what you do with them!
